What should I do to get ready to try out because it's a varsity team. Any tips and I will be practicing at a shooting range are there certain questions I should ask? Also what type of rifle do they use in highschools. I don't know if this helps but im going into 9th grade and the tryouts are in the winter.

  1. I would guess they would use target rifles specifically designed for this type of thing,  like Anschutz smallbore rifles.

Questions? I don't know what you don't know, so I can't tell you what to ask. Ask whatever you feel uncertain about. Like, "How do I shoot this thing? How well do I have to do to make varsity? How do you keep score?"

That's about all I can tell you. I don't know much about it myself. All I do know is that it is awesome you want to shoot. I hope that stays with you the rest of your life.

  2. Find out who the coach is and ask him..... He should be able to direct you as to what type of rifle would be best for his activitys.....

Most likely he will suggest a bolt action .22LR rfile... See the Savage and Ruger rifles below

    Savage.... Nice, not too expensive..

    Ruger - Very expensive

    Marlin -- Inexpensive but nice...

Henry Rifle.... Nice and not too expensive....

Talk your parents into going over to the sporting goods store and talk to the salesman....

  3. I help coach a junior rifle program (11 to 18 year olds) we use target 22s  an assortment of Kimbers, Remingtons, WInchestes and a Savage.

You have to start somewhere so I would not be discouraged. You will be shooting four position Prone (lying), sitting, kneeling and standing. Just getting used to the posistions helps a lot. You will also be using receiver peep sights which are a bit strange at first but once you re used to them you wonder why anyone would use  anything else. I even have them on my deer rifle (OK scopes have their value in hunting too).  IF your parents are cooperative and you have access to a range that allows position shooting you should get your own 22 rifle. The Savage FVT ($300) is fine, though if you really get in to it the higher end rifles are worth the money.
