I want to join the local volunteer fire department, but I don't know what to expect.?

Question

I am a female and mostly men join but it sounds interesting. I know a lot of firemen but I don't really know much about fire fighting. I know that they kind of have they're own language but is there somewhere I can read up info on fire departments/fire fighting before I go join. I just don't want to look like the idiot that knows nothing. Or if anyone can help me I'd really appreciate it!!!! Thanks!

In my county you have to attend fire fighting school just like the paid guys. Some departments will accept you if you have some EMT training. I am a man and tried to join and was rejected because of no training. It may be different in your area.

Just go in.  That's what the guys do.. unless you are afraid you can't handle something they can.

They will train you and you will learn the lingo like everyone else does.
