  1. Check out AmeriCorps, Teach for America or City Year. I did AmeriCorps, but in comparison with Peace Corps I think you get more support with Peace Corps. In AmeriCorps you have to have the financial resources to get by for a year, the only help you get are some food stamps and health insurance (and pretty shoddy at that, if you have a preexisting condition). In Peace Corps they really make sure you have a roof over your head and a bed to rest it on.

  2. AmeriCorps

  3. Job Corps.

  4. AmeriCorps is very similar, but has service based in the U.S.  Many of their work programs feature small stipends, and there are tuition benefits similar to the Peace Corps.

    From their website:

    Is AmeriCorps like Peace Corps?

Yes. AmeriCorps is often referred to as "the domestic Peace Corps." Both agencies are committed to service, and both offer challenging and rewarding full-time opportunities. Peace Corps assignments are all overseas, and AmeriCorps members serve only in the US. While Peace Corps Volunteers serve for two years, a stint in AmeriCorps usually lasts 10 months to one year. (Some AmeriCorps projects also offer part-time opportunities, and some AmeriCorps members serve more than one term of service.)

And good for you for wanting to serve! :-)

  5. There are mission organizations in the US

believe me we need all the help we can get

  6. There are many organizations like it in the US. One, which is church related, is YWAM - Youth With A Mission - and they do great work.
