I have learned freestyle and breaststroke from school and my dad. I don't know how to do the flips right anymore though. I think I am better at breaststroke than freestyle but my form is not wonderful. If I join the swim team, will I be taught these things? Will the coach know what event I am better at? Swimming is so different from track that I feel weird joining.

  1. not to worry most schools label it "the freshman lane" its where all the newbees go to learn the basics, by the end of the season half of them are kicking the sophmores asses!

go for it! swimming is the greatest sport out there, you will make life long freinds, fast!

  2. My friends and I joined the swim team our senior year of highschool for fun...and we made it! Some didn't know the flip turns, two didn't know how to dive off the block, and you figure out the strokes in practice.

Watching will help, a LOT. And you'll be surprise how quickly you'll pick up flip turns just from asking someone else on the team to teach you. Your form will improve with practice and help from your coach. Your coach will watch you practice and with your input and their own judgement will place you in events in which they think you can excel. Good luck!

  3. Well, at my school everyone made the team so that wasn't a problem, although i wish we could have cut some people.  For our swim team we spent days just working on turns and starts, and the newer kids at the beginning of the year would basically be taught to swim and not have actual workouts.  So, i wouldn't worry about it, and just go for it.  You will most likely be taught what you need to know.

You will probably be put in a few different events until the coach finds one thats right for you and/or the team.  I was pretty much put in the events that no one else swam, like the 500 and the 200IM. You probably wont get stuck with those unless you have good endurance and can swim all the strokes.
