  1. I ran track in high school.  You have to run alot of miles even if you are a sprinter.  It's so much fun and I was in the best shape of my life... even got voted "best body" in high school.  LOL!  The more you work out, the better shape you'll be in to run longer distances.  Your coach will put you where you're best and leave you out of what you're not so good at.  Some people only do one thing and it's all good.  GO FOR IT!

  2. just because practice lasts for 2 1/2 hours, you are certainly not running constantly for that length of time. There are plenty of breaks for rest and water and the actual time you spend running is much shorter.

running is a good way to lose FAT, not necessarily weight because you will gain muscle which weighs more than fat.

track is really fun because you are with friends in a team atmosphere, but there is also an aspect of individual accomplishment when you reach your goals and stuff.

  3. yes you definetely loose weight. I joined my high school cross country team 4 weeks ago. I was 180 when I started....Now im 170.....At first it really was not fun at all. I thought I was going to have to quit. But after a couple weeks in it got dramatically easier...When you start to be able to run 4 miles straight without stopping, you start to get really proud of yourself. But make sure you eat a lot so you dont get too skinny...I lossed 10 pounds in 4 weeks!...starting eating if u join!

  4. Track is really super funn!! i had a couple friends during track that have asthma and there were days where they couldnt take it, but they stuck in there and they were great runners. One was a sprinter and one was a distance person and they always did great even with asthma. Sometimes you make think its hard but just put your mind to it and you'll be fine! Trust ME! and plus during track there is a lot of down time. You arnt always running. Its fun! do it :] and one pointer dont just do track because you want to loose weight. that is a horrible thing. i had a friend that was doing that and now she is too too too skinny because she just runs to loose weight. dont be like her. run for fun :]

  5. I'm better at the long distance, but I find it so much boring. If you are a good sprinter, I suggest the 100m , since it is in my opinion, one of the most exctiting races, also the 200m is fun. Running isn't really the most fun sport in the world, but it does keep you healthy and in shape, AND since you are good at it, you should try it out. You may make some new friends too :)

  6. When in high school I was a big man and i was on the track team but i did shotput. going to the meets was tons of fun though. At the end of my senior year I started running-at first I couldn't even go half a mile without stopping, but i kept pushing myself to go farther and farther and it was really hard and took like 4 months, but I lost 95 pounds and I can run 20+ miles and running is a big part of my life that i am very thankfull for and i wish i could go back to highschool to run track. I didn't have asthma or anything, but if you work hard you can be as good as you want to be

  7. i'm just like you, except i came in first out of the 0 period sixth grade girls (i have asthma and am out of breath after the mile). it's good to be out of breath after running, it means you did you're best. if you can get a good time on the mile you'd be good for cross-country. but track is more than running, theres the long and high jump, and other stuff. and if your exercising your most likely to lose weight (well, if you eat right too)

  8. just run for fun you don't need to join track

  9. Train and practise

    run a little everyday

and ask your doctor if your lungs can handle it

Either way Track would be good fun and i do assume from all  the running and hard work you do burn fat and loose weight

  10. im on the track team and i love it. it definitely helps you lose some weight (not a ton) and helps you feel more healthy and fit. Plus, running's good for exercise and social. if it's too hard for you, you can drop out at any time. But from your description, it sounds like you won't need too.

  11. If you are only doing it to run for fun and loose weight but do not want to subject yourself to the commitment of a strictly regimented practice schedule just forget about the team and do  it on your own for fun. That way you can run as little or much as you wish and control your weight by the effort you put into your work outs and the diet you take in.

  12. Lots of good answers here.  I'll try not to repeat.

You don't have to join the track team, although that's one way to get some structure.  You can run by yourself, with a friend, or with a running group.  You might try a women-only running group.  They can be very supportive (and some are really fast, too!)

As to your breathing and asthma, both can change with experience.  The more consistently you run at a steady pace, the better and deeper your breathing will become.

I am currenty a latent asthmatic.  About seven years ago, I was overweight and I was using an inhaler four times daily, sometimes more.  I got angry because I couldn't run more than a block, and I had been a distance runner in high school.  Not fast, but I could do ten miles in practice without a problem.  So, I started walking, then run-walk, then running.

Long story short, with changes in my diet, I dropped 40 pounds.  And I have only used maybe once a year in the last five years.  That's no exageration.  No other medication.  Just running, and later cycling.

Have some fun with it.  That's how you keep going.  Who knows?  maybe you'll end up on the track team.  And if not, so what?  Do it for yourself.

  13. My sister absolutely LOVES track. She's a long distance runner. However, she eats a lot of junk food and tons of carbs so she didn't loose any weight, she just stayed the same. It will be fun if you set your mind to it. However, if you want to loose weight, I'd say eat healthy too.

  14. If you don't think your up for the track team, why not see if there's any clubs to join? Look up to see if your school has a health club or running/walking club.

  15. Track is fun and it doesn't exactly mean you will loose wait if your friend did. Try going to a gym or exercise around the house.

And I did track it was fun, a great way to meet new people, but it doesn't mean you'll loose wait.

    Hope this helps,

       -Jill

  16. I have been on a track teem every year but i dont have asthma it depends on how bad it is for you. And they might make an ecception for you and let you skip sometimes if you need to. My track teem was small and didnt go evryday or anything so i dont know if you can lose weight if your friends did then i guess you could o and its really fun to me i love running

  17. I LOVE TRACK!! and you will too. i was just as skeptical about track as you were.  i never ran farther than a mile at a time. but by the end of the year, i could run 5 miles without stopping.  so, yes i think you will lose weight and you'll feel better about yourself and just overall look better

  18. Join the track team you will be surprised at what you can do if you do it everyday, but be perpared because the first week is the worst but don't give up! You can do a great job if you beleive in yourself and try your hardest everyday. But if you are also going to have a lot of homework then you are going to want to consider that too

    Hope this helps

    Have fun

P.S. Track is not all about running it is called track and field you can do field events to give your legs a break!!

  19. yes, run track if you want to run that much (it is a huge commitment), track is extremely fun.

  20. Track is great and is worth it. Its hard work, but it really is a lot fun. You meet new people, you get in shape and you become a better runner.

  21. Track is a lot of fun and not everyone out there are amazing atheletes and they are all out there for different reasons.

A good coach will encourage you and find events best for you with your asthma.  With more training running will actually improve your asthma a lot of times, at least that is what it did for me.

Lastly, you will make a lot of really good friends that will be most rewarding.

    Good luck, hope you join!
