Question:

I want to keep some soil in my greenhouse in 36"tubs?

And need to know if holes have to be put through the tubs,to alow air into the soil.

  1. You will need to put a few small holes in the bottom of the tubs to allow for water drainage. Failure to have proper drainage in containers can lead to the container becoming saturated and can cause the plants in the containers to rot. 36 inches is quite large :) If there are no drain holes in the container, your plants' roots will most likely rot in the container. Put the holes in the bottom, not the sides. If you place holes in the sides of the container, the water will seep out of them and won't reach the bottom of the container. Good luck.


  2. I keep potting soil and well-finished compost in covered containers without holes.... just keep it dry..... it's the same as the stuff being in bags..... and you will be opening the containers occasionally and be able to see any problem....  

  3. We store potting soil and peat in 5 gallon buckets without drainage in our greenhouse.

    Don't cover the containers because the moisture in the medium will create mold and other problems.

    Just sprinkle with water when the top portion gets dried out.

  4. I wouldn't think so, but you may need holes in the bottom to release excess water the plant hasn't absorbed.
