I want to know, as a van driver for autistic children, is there an aid or helper usually? Or just driver?

  1. If this is for public school, the child can only have an aide or helper if the childs IEP teams agrees to this.


  2. In our school system, we were always required to have a monitor for special ed buses. That is until next year, even though we are neck deep in special ed controversy and potential lawsuits (not all without merit), our superintendent who never even had a special ed student in his classroom has decided we can do without that expenses. I am sure he does not know the IDEA law or any specifics about any program concerning exceptional children.

    I think parents and drivers may have some say in this matter. However, drivers can be replaced, so they would want to have parental backing before jumping into the fray.

    the students should have it written in theri IEP if they require an aide on the bus
