  1. Im sure you will have to be the one to arrange the murder, auctions usually are held at an auction yard not a slaughterhouse. The auctioneers just want the animals out of there, what happens to it is up to the highest bidder.

  2. Some slaughterhouses do work with auction houses for transport and butchering, but 99% of the time, that is the responsibility of the buyer.

Also, there is a slaughter and processing fee that is ADDITIONAL to the sale price.  A 150-pound hog that is bought at auction for $75 is going to cost about $1.50-3.00 per pound for processing... so you're actually looking at an investment of much more than the initial purchase price.

I generally warn against buying at a sale barn anyway.  Most of the animals you find there are "bargains" because they're sickly, old, poor producers, or have some other issue that will prevent the seller from getting fair market value for the animal.

I've sold animals at auction because I've been too successful at hatching chicks and wanted to get my numbers back down.  I had a very happy buyer who bought everyone up for about 1/5 of what they were worth.  That's not very common.

Also, if you are looking for animals to buy for meat, keep in mind that some of them may have been on antibiotics recently and there is a moratorium period necessary prior to slaughter.  This may be an extra charge if the slaughterhouse has to hold them over for 3-10 days.

If you're looking for meat animals, look for a reliable source.  Find a local farmer who raises meat animals and buy a half a steer or some broilers.  Fresh, farm raised meat is definitely superior to what you'll find in a grocery store, but you still get what you pay for.  Know your seller, and know how they keep their animals and their husbandry practices.  Auctions are usually clearinghouses and not necessarily a safe way to supply your family with food.
