I want to know about painting a stone fireplace, and keeping it safe as-well as durable. Can it be done?

The fireplace is a cold gray stone, in a rustic knotty-pine family-room, and I'd like to add warmth, and charm. We are going for a lodge look. I'm thinking a faux stone look.

the best way is to seal or primer the stone, If you go to Lowes or any Hardware store they carry it. Its really easy to apply, then once the primers is down you can decorate it.
