wait list tickets means you are on a list waitng in a queue.

if a tiket is available you will be the first person to get one if you are on the top or else according to the  chronological number you are given.

Waiting list is basically the status when all tickets for a particular train are full. You can however still buy the tickets even though you don't have a confirmed seat. If somebody cancels their ticket, you move up in the wait listing queue. You can check the status of the current position in the wait listing queue using your ticket's PNR number in any railway station or online. Your can use any of these sites to check you'r tickets current status: www.indianral.gov.in, www.indiantrains.org

A PNR number is a 10 digit number, printed on the top left corner of your ticket.

Wait listed ticket means that your reservation is not confirmed. The RAC tickets which means reservation against cancellation have better chances of confirmed reservation compared to wait listed reservation. The wait listed ticket holders cannot board the train where as RAC ticket holders can board the train and will get a seat to sit and no berth to sleep.

Waitlisted tickets may get confirmed when there is a large cancellations or additional bogies are attached to the trin to claer the RAC and Wait listed tickets. This happens usually in festival periods.
