I have met a few people who live in Longyearbyen.  A lot of people come to live there just for the summer tourist season, especially since it can be very difficult to find a permanent job.  There is apparently a surprisingly large Thai community in town.  And allegedly, the people don't actually mind the dark winters as much as you'd expect.
