  1. Go to a music store (Brook May's is my personal favorite), or somewhere that they actually SELL electric guitars (perhaps Guitar Center). Of course, they can be very expensive, depending on where you go or who teaches you.

It also depends on if you're paying for weekly, monthly, or yearly lessons. First you should figure out how long you're going to actually want to take these lessons.

I spent $80.00 a month for my guitar lessons. Like I said, the price is dependant on where you go and who teaches you.

Though I don't reccommend it over personal lessons, you could always go to YouTube and find guitar lessons. That's how I'm learing piano right now.

  2. If you take lessons, you'll learn how to read notes and then some. Go on a search of your local music stores and ask if they offer lessons. Most do so you'll be in luck! :-D

As for the cost, every teacher has a different price, and you usually get what you pay for (or not sometimes). You're lucky if you get a competent teacher the first time around. I had to go through two to get the teacher that was PERFECT for me. And made the most of my money.

  3. Most people who play guitar cant read music in the first place, so that doesnt really matter. Instead, they use a simplified version of music notation called tablature.

As for the lessons, there's plenty of good lessons you can take online, but what I would go with is the book: Alfred's Teach Yourself To Play Guitar(that's how I learned)

With the guitar, dont be scammed by the really cheap squier and ibanez 'starter packs'. if you want a good guitar that wont fall apart in two seconds, you're gonna have to spend some cash. The pack I would go with is the Laguna Ultimate rock pack, which includes the guitar, amp, strap, cable, picks, and instructional DVD for only $350. you can find it at your local guitarcenter, or at www. musiciansfriend.com

As for tips, I've only got three: practice, practice, practice!

  4. books are great and you can buy them for $20 or less!

Thats better than playing $20 a lesson for a teacher... I learned how to play from a book called "learn to play guitar" from Barnes and Noble for only $13 and now im lead guitarist for a classic band 3 months later!

  5. learn to read tabs they look like

    1-------------------------------------...

    2-------------------------------------...

    3-------------------------------------...

    4-------------------------------------...

    5-------------------------------------...

    6---0-3-5----0-3-6-5----0-3-5--3-0----...

the line on the bottom is the thickest string the one on top is the thinnest

    the numbers are the frets

you can go on ultimate-guitar.com to search for tabs

that pack is great! comes with everything you need for a reasonable price! amp lasted 4 years until I played on it at max volume for an hour (dumb dumb idea) and guitar's still fine!

I'm in a band (www.myspace.com/pandaforceband) and no one in the band can read music for their respective instrument. granted, the singer can read music parts for voice and I can read music for trumpet/french horn. we each have over 10 years of experience so picking up guitar was easy. I would recommend taking lessons for at least 2 months, 5-6 preferrably, since it seems like you have no idea about music, which is perfectly fine. but anyway, in 5-6 months' time you should be able to read tabs AND play them well and also should have a better ear for music so you can start listening to songs and playing them by ear instead of having to refer to tabs.

total cost= around 300 for guitar pack +shipping/handling or tax. around 200 for lessons, so 500. SO worth it. good luck to you!
