ok i have 3 pink kissing fish they all get along there are two big ones and one a little smaller one. the two big ones use to always kiss and then the little one took over one of the two that use to kiss. i think the one that was a mate and the other took its mate is stressed or feels left out should i get another pink kissing fish?

and i was wondering how to tell from a male or female i was told that the male had a hump on there had and the females was flat well my two big ones have a slight hump and the little one has a flat head.

i was wondering when they suck on each others sides and swim in circles and try to suck on each other then kiss, what the heck they were doing is it a game or are they mating?

i want to know how to get my fish to breed if i truly do have a male and female pair.

  1. ...males occasionally fight by pressing their lips together, and the weaker one will back off....although the variety is normally very tolerant and not territorial

....there are no visibile anatomical differences to notice...the females are usually larger than males

....although they breath similarly to Bettas, the Gourami do not build nests either....just no way to tell males from females, until you see one laying her eggs, then you will no who she is

....you should provide some nesting materail for them to lay eggs in, like lettuce leaves.....bacteria growing on the leaves will nourish the babies when they hatch

  2. That cute kissing and chasing is actually fighting. Many species of fish lip-lock during a fight. Your fish are fighting over dominance. Males are highly territorial and this kissing and fighting will continue until one or both fish are injured.

Kissing Gouramis are big fish with no external differences between genders. The two that fight are almost definitely two males and should be separated. The smaller one could well be a third juvenile male.

In order to breed you would need to see breeding activity however this is difficult in captivity, you would need two adult fish and at least a 75-100 US gallon tank. (Kissing Gouramis get to 12" long excluding tails).
