  1. If you get a Voice Modem installed in your PC, you can record all phone calls on the line plugged into to Voice Modem.

NCH Swift Sound sells many different types of phone interface software that can do what you want, when used in conjunction with a Voice Modem.

  2. yes, you can. There are legal issues if you do, so be sure to follow the rules.

Radio Shack sells a device to turn a tape deck on but you can also connect to the sound card. Just start the Windows Sound Recorder when you get a call.

  3. some answering machines have a recording facility, but the sound quality is not too good and last one I had could only do one call at a time

put "phone recorder" in your search to find reviews and sites that sell recorders (some are expensive designed for call centres though)

or electronics store like Radio Shack will have a simple suction cup gadget  you put on your handset and hook up to a tape recorder

in most places it is fully legal to record a conversation that you are party to, without the other person's permission, but recording other people's is illegal. Call centres tell you they are recording (so you can choose not to talk) because of this = you are talking to the operator, the recording is being done by someone else (the company).

there are gadgets for recording cell phone calls too!
