  1. Yes if it is hooked up properly.

  2. Yes you can. But only HD will give you true 5.1 surround. Everything else will either give you 2.0 or 2.1. That is still better than any TV though.

Its very very simple to do.

1st, you take the best sorce of audio cable for you reciver and cable box. i.e. coax, optical ect.

2nd, hook the sound cable into the cable box and into the cable/dtv slot on the back of your stereo.

It can go into more detaile depending on if you are using a universal remote and other components. But thats all you should need to get started.

3rd, mute/ turn off your tv speakers.

  3. AAACK! STOP YELLING AND TURN OFF THE CAPS LOCK.

    Ahem...

Most TV shows are not broadcast in surround sound.  If you have digital cable (along with the digital cable box) then yes, it is possible to get surround sound for those programs (mainly movies) that support it.

Otherwise, you'll just get stereo sound.  It is possible to put your surround system into a sort of "fakey surround" mode, but this just has the left and right signals coming out of your rear speakers - not the same as true surround.

Anyways, if you don't have a cable box, then check the back of your TV.  You should see a pair of red and white jacks that are labeled "Audio Out" or something like that.  You'll want to connect these to a pair of stereo inputs on your surround sound receiver.  You don't have to use a red and white cable for this - that's just to help you keep the connections straight.  Any AV cable with RCA connectors on them will work.

At least on my TV (Sony) I have to use the setup menu for Sound to turn off the TV speakers - this allows the TV to use the audio outputs.  Then turn on your surround sound system, and set the input to where you have the TV plugged in.  You should now be hearing the TV through your front speakers.
