I want to know is there any way to find out who my grandfather is or was?

My father is a bum, I can not get to his Birth certificate, do I have to wait till he is dead to find out this kind of information. To bad Maury Povich was not around in the 40’s. I know who his mother was and when she dies I really want to know what name they have on his birth certificate or did Florida not require a fathers name back in the late 40’s?

  1. Depending on where your father was born the birth records may be on line. I just found the North Carolina Birth Index 1800-2000 on Ancestry.com. It listed names of the parents along with the name and date of birth of the child. Some States have some of their vital records on line. Good luck.

  2. List  the info you have on your grandmother here and maybe someone with a subsciption to a genealogy site can track it down for you.

Due to problems with identity theft, you can not get your dad's bith certificate, even when he dies.

But, you can get a death certificate, when he dies, which may list his father's name, if it is provided by a family member.

Census records for 1940 have not been released yet and won't be until 2010, so that's a "waiting game".

    Good luck!

  3. I don't know your family situation but I suggest asking your Father or your Grandmother.  You could possibly ask your Mother if she knows..your Father might have mentioned something to her.

Question:  where your parents married?  If so, you could try to obtain a copy of their marriage certificate or look in the paper around the time of the weding to see if there was a marriage notice placed.

    Good luch with your search
