What does a birdy, and an eagle mean in golf terms? What are other golf terms (and possibly explain what they mean)? What is the difference between a sand wedge and a pitching wedge? Thank you.

  1. Condor = 4 Under Par (Hole in one on a par 5)

    Albatross = 3 Under Par

    Eagle = 2 Under Par

    Birdie = 1 Under Par

    Bogey = 1 Over Par

    Double Bogey = 2 Over Par

    Wedges are used as utility around the green and from distances of about 100 yards out from the green. I say utility because they can be used in different ways to get the ball to do what you want it to do. Besides being used like any other club you can use wedges (pitching wedge, sand wedge, lob wedge) for chipping, pitching, bunkers, etc. around the green.

    For more golf terms see http://www.GolfFoundations.com/terms.asp

  2. A Birdie is 1 under par.  Eagle is 2 under par. An Albatross (sometimes called a double-eagle) is 3 under par, which is only really possible on a Par 5 hole where you 'hole out' (get the ball in the cup) in 2 shots. A hole-in-one speaks for itself (and yes an albatross ona par 4 would be a hole-in-one.)

    A pitching wedge is for short controlled shots on to the green from under 100yds away, off the fairway or from the rough. It will hit the ball further than a sand wedge, but less than a 9-iron. It typically has a loft (the angle of the clubface relative from vertical) of around 48-50 degrees

    A sand wedge is a club designed to play the ball from sandy conditions, i.e. bunkers. to do this more effectively than a pitching wedge it has more loft (up to 55 degrees) to get under the ball, and may often have more 'bounce' (the angle of the sole of the club) to dig through the sand better.

    You may also hear of gap wedges (to fill any large distance/loft gap between pitching and sand wedges) and lob wedges (60-64 degrees loft) for playing very short, high lob or 'flop' shots, but those are tough shots to master.

    Good luck with your golf

  3. as above

  4. First on the golf course you have Par 3, Par 4 and Par 5. what this means is form your first contact with the ball you must get the ball in the hole in the number of par. ex: three shots for a par 3 and so on and so fourth. On that note if you make a hole one shot less than par that my friend is a birdie. two under is an eagle, unless it's a par three in which that would be a hole in one.

                                The difference between a sand wedge and a pitching wedge is it's loft and use. each club has it's function. Sand wedge is used primeraliy for bunker shots. (sand traps) Now I also use my sand wedge when I'm about 70 to 80 yards from the green. The pitching wedge is used from about 125- 130 yards out. This depending on the players ability. the closer to the green you don't have to make a full swing.For example: If you were to take the club back to say 9 o'clock keeping your hand from passing behind you, then swing foward and stop at 3 o'clock and keep the club from passing behind again. that is a pitch shot. Now mind you there is a lot more mechanics to the swing so don,t try what i'm saying because that is only an example that is to answer your question. Are you just starting to play? If you are, do yourself a favor and take lessons. the golf pro will also help with teaching you all of the terms and jargon of the game!! believe me there are a lot of terms and jargon for you to learn.  hope this helps!!

  5. A Birdie is 1 under par. for example if you should a 3 on a par 4 then you get a birdie.

    An Eagle is 2 under par.

    Other golf terms that you may here is tending the flag. which is when someone holds the pin in the hole and once you putt the ball they will take it out. This is done when you are far from the hole and would like the flag in there to help you line up your shot.

    Shot Honors; this is the term giving to the person who is tees off first in the hole. It is given to the person that has the lowest score on the previous hole. And you have honors untill you lose it to one of your playing partners.

    foursome; this is a group of 4, a threesome is a group of 3, a twosome is a pair, and a single is if your playing alone.

    The difference between a sandwedge and a pitching wedge is the loft angle. A sandwedge is a more lofted club meaning that you can get the ball up higher but it doesnt go as far as the pitching wedge. It is also a lot easier to use a sandwedge out of the sand because of this loft angle so it cuts through the sand easier.

    Good luck
