  2. The town of Trapani is located in the western part of Sicily. It faces the Egadi islands. Behind it is Mount Erice. The town winds along a stretch of land which extends out into the sea in a curve. The innermost part, that built on the side of the mountain, is the modern; the ancient nucleus was concentrated instead toward the end of the promontory. Its port, where most of the town's commercial activity takes place, is very efficient. In Trapani one of the most characteristic and unique religious feasts is celebrated: the Procession of the Mysteries. During the summer, musical festivals of considerable interest take place in the open at Villa Margherita. There are various palaces and churches of historical and artistic interest, such as the Church of the Annunziata, the Palace of the Giudecca, the Cathedral, and various other buildings mainly of the Baroque period. The National Pepoli Museum is extremely important. Erice, the small town on the top of the mountain of the same name offers truly unforgettable vistas both in the village itself, which has kept its ancient character intact and in the magnificent panorama which on particularly clear days stretches to the coasts of Africa. The extraction of salt is the principal activity in Trapani. The salt, after special purifying treatment is the source of a flourishing commerce.
