well 1.8s have head gasket problems till modified, then should be a pretty sound engine, and the ird and viscous coupling can be weak. but for that age should have been sorted by now. All the range good off road compared to most soft roaders and can easily embarrass the more hard core 4x4s and drives well on the road to. just check propshafts are connected underneath as often removed to hide ird problems

The clutch can be a problem, when it is replaced the hydraulic cylinder will also need replacing, all not cheap to do. Also check for any leaks and I do mean leaks, as all Land Rovers are like puppies they leave puddles everywhere!! If there are no puddles, it's not that it doesn't leak, it's run out of whatever was leaking.

Avoid buying a petrol engined one, they are not worth a carrot secondhand because of all the engine problems.

They don`t just suffer from head gaskets, they also have cylinder liner problems which are very expensive to repair, usually ends up with a replacement engine.

The transmission also needs checking out properly on all Free Landers.This can be another major expense on both petrol and Diesel models.

The general build quality on early models is not good with expensive electrical problems adding to the reason for not buying one at all.

they give head gasket proplems on 1.8 petrol models i would steer well away from petrol models, unless it was very cheap ,then it might be worth ago
