  1. construction and maintainece

  2. Maintenance of Way (MOW) makes extensive use of engineering knowledge, as related to track-age.  The rails aren't just laid after the surveyors are through.

For example, curvature is engineered with "compensation" in tight turns in heavy grade territory.  In this instance the grade will be lessened through the turn between the spiral on each end.  The spiral is the engineered track-age into but not a true part of a curve.  It sort of gets the trucks under the car thinking about turning.

Another example is on higher speed track-age, super-elevation needs to be engineered to allow for control of L/V forces.  Here the bug-a-boo is the inter-relation between the lateral "L" and vertical "V" forces at play where wheel meets rail (aka 'track - train dynamics').  The ratio is expressed as 'L over V' or L/V.

As long as value of V is more than L, the equipment will ride through the curve normally.  But, if L becomes .9 of V or greater, the wheel can climb the rail on the outside of the curve.  If L exceeds V then there will be a pile-up.  Factors such as centrifugal and centripetal forces must be accounted for, otherwise you lose the roadbed integrity to operate at speed.

I don't pretend to know the math.  That's why there are engineers.

Many railroads used to have a department dubbed "Buildings and Bridges" (B&B), but it is likely the "bridges" aspect may have been rolled into the MOW Department.

Of course there is much, much, much more, but I'm not that kind of engineer.

I know the term MOW is still used, but it may well be that the "B&B Gangs" are a thing of the past.

    Sigh.........
