  1. That's a good "beginner's" question, so I'm going to recommend that you read the booklet that I've attached. It's a publication of the US Department of Education, called "Funding Education Beyond High School: The Guide to Federal Student Aid"

You're going to like this booklet because it's relatively short, it's really easy to understand, and it explains everything you need to know about how the government's financial aid program works.

You'll learn, for example, that the government doesn't award scholarships - the three main types of government educational assistance are grants, work-study and loans.

Grants and work-study are only available to students who have exceptional financial need. Unfortunately, this doesn't mean "my parents have no idea how they can afford to pay for me to go to school", because pretty much everyone's parents feel that way. Exceptional need is "pretty poor".

If that's not you, your most likely government assistance will come in the form of loans. You can borrow from "private" lenders, rather than the government, but the government's loans are much, much better. You'll read about why in this booklet.

You'll also learn how to apply for all of the government's financial aid - it's pretty easy. There's an application called the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), that you and your parents have to fill out. That pretty much gets you considered for everything.

Your question is actually quite astute, because the cost of an on-campus dorm is part of what financial aid calls "Cost of Education". When you apply for financial aid, it's not just the tuition that you're being considered for, it's the cost of the books, the college fees, room and board (that's meals), transportation to and from school, and some other educational-related expenses, even a computer. When the financial aid office is evaluating how much you'll need help affording, they'll consider the cost of all of those things.

One piece of bad news is that very, very few students receive what everyone likes to call a "free ride" - in other words, very few students are awarded enough assistance so that they and their parents don't have to pay for school. Keep in mind that there are so many students who need assistance - and the goal is to help many people with a little money, rather than a few people with a lot.

Chances are that you're going to receive some assistance, but you and your parents will probably need to borrow a pretty decent sized amount of money for you to afford school. That's why it's critically important that you consider the cost of education at any school that you'd like to apply to. \

This area of Yahoo! Answers is filled with questions from students who are asking "How can I afford my $38,000 tuition if my mom and dad are refusing to give me any money?'

You know what? That's an excellent question. How ARE you going to afford it? The correct answer is really "choose a cheaper school that you CAN afford", or at least something a little bit closer to reality.

Start with this booklet, it will answer a lot of your questions. I'm sure it will help. Good luck to you!

  2. www.fafsa.gov

They can give you federal and state grants (free money) as well as student loans (which you have to pay back). That money can be used for tuition, books, dorms, living expenses, etc.

If you want scholarships, check out www.fastweb.com. They have a multitude of scholarships, but you have to work for them. Many require extensive applications and essays but it is worth it if you get free money!!!

Good luck and remember a higher education will pay off in the long run!

  3. well you can get something that is called a grant and the grant will go toward all of you schooling and that's dorm and classes.
