1. The power factor of most industrial loads are the lagging type. why?

2. And also what of the disadvantages of having low power factor in power system?

  1. 1. most industrial loads are caused by motors which have coils of wire to form magnetic fields.  This produces an inductive load and so a lag.  Industries with lots of motors used to maintain lots of capacitors to counter act the inductive load on the power grid.

    2. The lower the power factor the less "actual power" you have.  Actual power is the power you have to do real work.  power factor is the ratio of

    actual power to power and so as it approaches zero the ability to do work goes to zero.


  2. Lots of big motors have lagging types due to the inductive field they use to cause the motion

    Low power factor is a problem to utilities because it apears as a large demand when it really isn't.  It makes them supply a "big pipe" with a substation to back it up when it will never be needed.
