I want a board that looks high tech and new age.. I don't like the old kinds that are on eBay.. they look boring.

  1. haha

rook knight bishop king queen biship knight rook

Pawn Pawn Pawn Pawn Pawn Pawn Pawn Pawn

That's how you set it up

    I'm 14.

Rook-can only go fowards and side to side with nothing in it's way.

Knight- makes a L. 2 up 1 to the right. or 1 up 2 to the right 2 backwards 1 left/right. Get it?

Bishop-diagnal always. With nothing in it's way

King- Can only move one space at a time any direction, but he's your most important player-you cannot get him taken/eaten/killed

Queen-Can move anywhere, any amount of spaces as long as theres nothing in her way.

Pawns- They can move two spaces as their first move and after that can only go straightfoward one space at a time. They attack diagnaly to the front.

    Simple enough

    =D

By a cheap board to practice on

  2. obiously you have a computer.... there are chess games on PC software that help you learn to play... my son has a couple... If you want to buy a board look at Wal Mart they vary in price from cheap plastic for probably $5 to a nicer wood or glass set from around $12 to $15 or so, this would be good to start on and learn on... then look for a nicer or different board... my son has several boards from an old one that his grandfather gave him to a marble one a friend of the family gave him (his favorite) and one that is the "Pirates of the Caribean" theme one...

  3. Well you can always make your own

but u should try goin to stores like DollarTree/Family Dollar

umm walmart, rite aid (idk how 2 spell it) walgreens

    idk any other stores

  4. For low-cost chess boards and books, it's hard to beat The Chess Store: http://www.thechessstore.com

They have a pretty wide variety of styles, but the 'tech' sets are pretty expensive.

For some 'cool' factor sets, there's several plastic sets out that Target/ToysRUs/WalMart have sold... Some have Star Wars as a theme... some with Marvel Superheroes... Lord of the Rings... You can even get a fun Lego-themed set from http://www.lego.com

There are glass/crystal sets available at ToysRUs as well, plus they're pretty easy to get through eBay.

Books-A-Million sells a plastic set with a 'learn to play' book, and I've even seen a set where the moves are marked on the pieces.

    Good hunting.

  5. That would be starting with a very expensive board - seems a waste until you want a platform to showcase some talent with the game. Why not spend $5 on a plastic set, $20 on a good book, and some time learning to play first?

  6. go to walmart you can get a chess board for 5$
