Question:

I want to learn Contemporary Dance ... Do I need to take ballet or other lessons first?

I would like to learn contemporary dance. I'm 26, have never taken a dance class before in my life. I am not looking to go to competitions or make a career of this, I just have a strong attraction to this style. It is so beautiful and emotional....I have actually cried several times just watching people perform.

So, is it possible to just jump right in to Contemporary, or am I going to need to build my dance moves/lingo in a more basic class first?

I live in Dallas (uptown), so I am sure there are plenty of great studios around, but if anyone could name one close by I would appreciate the info. I wouldn't know a good dance studio from a whole in the wall.

Thanks!

  1. Where i come from a year or two in either jazz or ballet is strongly recommended before starting lyrical.

as for a studio idk goggle or phone book  i guessXD

  2. A basic beginner ballet class would really help you. If you can do two classes a week, I'd recommend it (one ballet, one modern or lyrical)

Look for a studio that has beginner adult classes so everyone in the class is at the same point.
