  1. A local guitar store. They seem to offer the best customer service and will help you find a beginner's guitar that is right for you. Guitar Center and such might work, but I'd go for the independent stores personally. Have fun.

  2. The best place would be any local guitar shop in your area.

If there is a Guitar Center or Sam Ash in your area, they will have a very nice large selection.

There's a lot that goes into buying a guitar such as deciding what type of guitar:  Electric, Acoustic, Electric-Acoustic, or Bass.

Once you decide on the type you'll have to decide on a budget.  Guitars will range from $150-$30,000 so make sure you know how much you are willing to spend.

$300-$400 will give you a good entry level guitar.  If you go electric keep in mind you'll need some $ for buying an amp and cables.

Also I'd recommend going to a local guitar shop, finding a guitar you like, then possibly purchasing it from Sweetwater.  http://www.sweetwater.com

Sweetwater has great warranties and they setup your guitar for free.  Setting up your guitar mainly includes lowering the action (putting the strings closer to the fret board) this makes it much easier to play the guitar ESPECIALLY for beginners.  They also give it a 55 point inspection to ensure your guitar is near perfect when it gets to you.  Plus Free SHipping and no sales tax will give you a better price.

Good Luck man, guitar is so much fun.
