A great website for learning the guitar is www.supersonic.net

It has great lessons that are easy to understand and thorough. Remember to focus on your music theory. its very important.

Also, the DVD Fender Presents...Getting Started on Electric (acoustic) guitar with Keith Wyatt is a great dvd for learning guitar with.

I'm a self taught guitar player and these two things helped me tremendously. Another helpful tip I can give you is to play with other guitarists or musicians. You learn a lot that way.

With the supersonic site, I picked lessons like...scales, chord progressions, chord shapes, barre chords, things like that and printed them  off and put them in a folder. That way you can easily access them and have them with you at all time.

A lesson on the site called writing the perfect riff part two has an awesome chart that shows the chords that sound nice together including the relative minor chord and explains that. So thats a nice chart to have.

Good luck playing, it takes patience and practice but its a lot of fun.

learn to read tabs. go to ultimateguitartabs.com and type in a song you like and learn the numbers of the frets and strings and you'll be set.
