I want to learn how to play the guitar is there any good free online lessons for beginners?

Well u can go to www.ultimate-guitar.com and there they have lessons from beginner to advance and they have songs that u can play and it shows u where to put ur fingers. Like for example right now i just learned ghost riders in the sky by johnny cash.

but i would suggest that sometime in the near future that you get a actual teacher, because if you are teaching yourself, you could fall into some bad habits that an online program wont be able to tell you to do it correctly, and it will be very hard to unlearn if you've set the bad habits into your playing!

try guitarmasterclass.com you have to pay for membership but you can learn the scales and pentatonics. You can learn different styles of music and once you're good at acoustic rock on at electric.

people always suggest Ultimate-Guitar.com for guitar lessons...  But i wouldnt suggest learning guitar online at all... books are better and you could bring bookd to places unlike computers... get "Learn to Play Guitar" from Barnes and Noble for $13... its a great book
