Question:

I want to learn how to pole dance... but I feel silly. Am I too short?

I'm a 21 year-old female... 105 pounds and 4'10 3/4" tall. I'm very short. I've been wanting to learn how to pole dance (for my SO's and own entertainment/exercise purposes only) because I love the moves and it looks like something I would really get into. I'm very interested in it.

I am very athletic... I play a lot of soccer and run every day... and I am very flexible... but I am also sort of RIGID. I'm not very fluid or graceful in my movements... I'm also very short. My legs are not long and slender like a dancer's... They're toned but short and stocky...

So I am afraid of looking and feeling silly and rigid. Is my build going to be a major issue in learning how to pole dance? Or am I just being insecure? If it is still possible for me to learn, how can I be more fluid in my movements and more confident in my rather short body and little legs??? =/

Good idea... or should I pursue something else?

Thanks

  1. Build doesn't matter, but some people find different moves harder than others. My friend has short legs, and found sitting on the pole very difficult to learn, but played around with the move until she found a way she could do it. The beauty of pole dancing is it's not fixed, you can treat it as a purely athletic sport, or a graceful dance, or a sensual show, or anything in between.

In the end, you're not doing it for anyone else but you and your partner, so why should you feel silly? Practice by yourself for a bit, watch yourself (in a mirror or on video) and watch dancers on YouTube. You'll feel a lot more confident once you've tapped into your own style, and in the end, confidence is the key to making anything look good!

  2. You would be good at it. They now have portable poles you can get at the hardware store.
