i want to learn how to surf ^__^

but but but i'm not gonna get the chance until a few years from now :(

obviously the only real way to learn how to surf is to actually do it -

but is there anything i can do now or practice on land that will help ?

like balance is important in surfing, i know that - so what about yoga ?

you need strong arms too so should i like start lifting weights ?

thanks to anyone who answers ^_^

  1. Skateboarding, snowboarding and wakeboarding use similar balancing skills,  If you have access to lake and boat, try wakesurfing.

Balance trainers like Indo boards will help.

  2. skateboarding but skateing hurts more when you fall but it will help a lot also swim in a pool to build up you're stength it will help with you're paddeling.

  3. you can purchese an indo board...its basically a board with a roller that you roll back and forth with and do tricks on...this is a really good way to develop your balance and it actually feels like surfing....you can also get a skateboard and yoga is cool to...heres the site for the indo board i think you should buy

    http://www.indoboard.com/application/car...

    Good luck

  4. You are exactly right! You need an ocean to learn how to surf. You can prepare (a little) by being in fairly good shape. Flexibility is a key. You can get that lots of ways, Yoga, martial arts, stretching exercises, gymnastics, other activities like swimming,  etc. Swimming is the core of surfing. Now pool surfing doesn't add up to ocean swimming, but you should do it, as often as you can.

Weight training is a great way to building upper body strength. Dumbbell bench presses work pecs, delts and triceps and lots of stabilizer muscles that help with swimming and paddling a surfboard. Doing squats (with weights), or squat thrusts (without weights of course) help build the core and leg muscles to help you 'pop up'.

Any board sport (skate, snow, ski, wake) will help improve or refine your balance. Working out on an "indo board" may be really helpful, too. Some surfers swear by it.

Now, get in really great shape, and make your way to the closest ocean at your earliest possible opportunity. When you get there, work on your ocean swimming skills, and then take some surfing lessons, before you conquer the waves on your own. Good luck!

  5. surfing requires good core strength as do most sports so working out your abs and back will help, and i wouldn't suggest lifting weights for your arms, it would be better to go and swim. the endo board is a good idea too.

  6. you need to learn what surfing feels like, to drop in, to turn. Best way to do that is skatepark or build yourself a miniramp. Save money and take trips to Mexico.
