  1. go to a surf shop and ask questions!!

  2. Hey there if you are unsure as to what type of board to get we have a full page of useful information for first time buyers on our site.

    Put this in your browser:

  3. I would get a bodyboard first. It will allow you to get used to the waves. You will see how the work and you won't have to deal with nose dives and bad wipeouts as much since you don't need to stand up.

After you know the wave and are getting on the should you should move up to a surfboard. I would get a 8ft or so soft top. No need for wax on these and if you hit yourself you won't get hurt as bad and you will get hurt trust me. You should also get a used board too because your 1st board is always going to take some damage so no use trashing a new board.

A lesson or two from a local surf shop will help too. An instructor will help you from forming bad habits such as getting up on your knee and such. You don't need to take a lesson, but it will help a lot especially if you can't go surfing more than 3 or 4 times a week.

Last but not least practice. The more you surf the faster you will learn. I have been surfing for 1 1/2 years, but I surf everyday and I am better than some people who have been surfing for 5 or more years! One more thing don't hesitate to ask other surfers for help in the water. They love to tell you how they do things. lol

Good luck dude! hope this helps. You are going to love it trust me.

  4. exactly how tall and skinny are you?

id say a 7'10 funboard is pretty legit for any beginner. plus, if/when you excel and want to try bigger waves a funboard can grow with you. go to your local surf shop and ask around theyll be able to help you out for sure.

  5. This is coming from someone who started surfing in his mid 20s, here is some advice:

    1.  Learn how to move on a skateboard first.  I'm surprised to hear of all the people who can't even balance themselves on a skateboard, guess what, water moves, cement doesn't,

    2.  Long boards are easier, but not designed for big waves.  Short boards harder, you have to be MUCH stronger just to catch a wave.  I have TONS of respect for anyone who can use a small board.

    3.  No upper body strength=you don't catch any waves.

    4.  weak=you can't even get out to the other side of the waves.

Surfing is quite simple if you have strength and endurance.

  6. big boards are easier for beginners
