  1. contrary to "popular" opinion, Casio's are not the best, but they are the cheapest, therefore they would be good for a novice.

  2. For a Hammond organ sound, I'm partial to Clavia's Electro 61. It's a tonewheel clone that emulates a Hammond B series organ. It also has very good Wurlitzer and Rhodes sounds. Roland, Korg and Hammond/Suzuki also make very good Hammond clones.

For synth sounds the Calvia Nord series is very good, as are most Korg keyboards. Korg's are very editable and can be "worked" to get just the sound you want.

Keep in mind these are pro keyboards and will also require an amplifier.

Casio and some Yamaha's will be much less expensive, and for a beginner that may be what you want. But you only get what you pay for.

Go to a music shop and play as many keyboards as you can. When you found what you like, spend the most you can afford and you'll be much happier in the long run and will probably stick with playing keys.
