i'm 14 years old and i want to learn to play guitar...2 or 3 years ago i got a guitar... a regular acoustic guitar, pretty simple, and i had a classical guitar class which i was pretty good at, but after that class was over i never picked up the guitar. when i got my first guitar i had the intentions of learning to play it well enough and eventually moving up to an electric guitar in order to play the music that i am most interested in... is it too late for me to start playing since i'm already 14? if not how should i get started? a private teacher? a book a website? im able to get any of those i just dont know which is best... my ultimate goal is to be really skilled at guitar and to be able to play a lot of my favorite rock n roll music with an electric guitar... i know some chords too so its not like i've NEVER picked up a guitar but im definitely a beginner. help thank you

  1. yes, you should definitely learn how to play guitar. its a great experience. i'm guessing that you learned how to read sheet music, so youre on the right track. and no, its not too late. you could even start at an older age and you would be fine. a private teacher would be best because a website can't tell you if youre doing something the wrong way or not. once you have a teacher and do some classes, practice as much as possible and try gaining speed on the frets. while looking for a teacher, practice the chords you know and look for some songs that you would like to learn how to play (regardless of how difficult they are...because you can learn them later). and dont be afraid to look outside the genre of rock...theres other good guitar music. good luck.

  2. PPPSSSHHH i started at 15, now im 17.

Get some easy songs that aren't that hard, and look up the tabs at

Ultimate-guitar.com then keep practicing till you can play them.

A teacher will get you to do scales and chords. Books will do similar. An electric is actually kinda easier, with easier to push notes.

At first, with chords and such, you will have pain in your fingertips till your skin hardens there and you get that big thumb muscle. Get some basic chords down first and don't give up. Smoke on the Water by Deep Purple was my first. Or Ironman.

DONT GIVE UP. Guitar is a great hobbie and i practice everyday, hopefully i can turn it into more of a hobbie.

You ever need a lil help just ask :D

  3. hendrix started playing at 14 and

    bass is hella more fun

  4. its NEVER too late

just learn some guitar tabs and practice practice and practice

  5. It really doesn't matter what guitar you start out with. I started out on a pretty expensive Gibson (Which was about Â¥160,000 JPY at the time, I'm pretty sure that's close to $1,500 USD).  It is never too late to play an instrument. Since you are 14, your brain is still growing, so it will be easier to re-learn it again. You should get started with a private teacher, and have him/her show the fundamentals, chords, etc. A book or a website is something you would want to make a last resort, because when you have a teacher, you can ask them a question, if you use a website or book you cannot ask it a question (Ok you can talk to the book or the screen, but it won't reply back).

Since you do plan to be a professional, recommit yourself to the guitar. Make a daily habit to play guitar night and day. Than you'll be a decent guitar player in less than a decade.

    Hope this helped!

P.S. Sorry, I could've gave a longer answer, but it is really late here, and this is my last answer for the night. So you can see I'm kind of sleepy right now.

  6. well it sounds like the classical guitar was only of interest in the class if you enjoyed it youd probably be still playing.

your better off playing music that you like because it motivates a person to continue playing. i started playing at 25 and have about a year into it but ive come a long way. the begining is very hard because you are very focused on the correct fingering , how to strum properly, and trying to make it sound like that song in your head.

the cool thing is after awhile your finger placement and strumming becomes automatic and your focus now is hearing the music you r playing its sweet.

buy the electric play what you like, that alone motivates me to play and complete whole songs. i use tabs on the internet and i teach myself. an instructor could help motivate u, and even help learn faster, properly, and learn tricks to rock guitar.
