  1. Do you have a machine yet?  If not, buy a cheap one with no fancy stuff (just straight and zigzag stitches).  Wal-Mart, etc. has them.  Senior citizen centers are full of sewers that will be more than glad to help you learn.  Our center here even has one day a week that they get together.  I know that's an odd suggestion, but these places are a wealth of info and teaching the "younger generation" is something they love to do.  And these ladies are talented!!!  You could also go to your public library and check out a book on learning to sew, but reading about it may not do the trick.  But, hey, it's free!!!

  2. I am not pushing religion here,  but a lot of churches have groups that get together to sew things for 3rd world countries.  I think a group like that would be a good hook up for free help, experience, & possible friendships too!

  3. Start out learning to sew by hand.  You'll need that experience at some point, and it gives you a better understanding of how things are put together.  I start all my students the old school way, with needle and thread in hand.  The beautiful parkas made by Inuits and all the clothes before the 1860's were made by hand.  In learning how to hand sew first you will acquire the technical uniform language that will help you before you get on a machine.

I start all my students out with a fabulous kit that has a DVD that teaches proper techniques and names.  You can look at the kit at:

Learn the right way--learn to use your hands first!  Good luck.
