I want to live in denial, but I know the Joe Louis will be replaced inevitably. Any speculation as to when?

Say what you want about the Joe Louis, but I love that d**n pond. I thought they were planning on building a new one soon, but then they renamed the entrances the "Gordie Howe" and "Steve Yzerman" Entrances, dedicated a statue to Gordie, and made some other small changes. I wouldn't think that they'd bother giving a name to an entrance if the arena will not be used in the next few years. Would they give the new Arena the same entrances? Would they keep the name of the entrances at the Joe until it is torn down? Also, where do you think the new one might be located? I thought they might put it near Comerica and Ford Field, there are some open lots in the vicinity that aren't even being used for parking at the moment.

I have no idea what plans are in store, and I feel like I should. Hopefully NIPS will come to the Red Wing rescue again with some official report that he somehow obtained from Ken Holland's office.

There are three ways a new stadium is built.

1. By the owner digging deep into his pocket and building a new arena.

2. By the community (City, State, Province, etc.) taking tax money and building a new arena.

3. By a third party (rich uncle syndrome) building a new arena as a business investment.

In Detroit with the present political, social, and economic condition option 2 is not an option.

With a new baseball stadium, a new football stadium and a new basketball arena recently constructed in the city all the rich uncles are pretty well tapped out.

That leaves only Mike Illitch to fund a new rink. Obviously since he is a pretty astute business man if it were to his benefit he would be building one right now. So obviously the answer is not for quite a while.
