I am gonna be at least 100 miles from civilization for a whole year and live off the land. I will attempt to survive with a black powder rifle plenty of ammuntion, Hatchet, knife, flint and tinder. Once I get into the wilderness I plan on making a small cabin and hunting, making my own cloths etc. Is there any state that will allow me to hunt all year around. I want to see if I can live like a mountain man, but I cant unless I get the ok from the state. Help please.

  1. Now, when you get to the Gobi Desert, be aware that there will be a lot of people also trying to live off the scarce fauna and plant life to be found there. So you will probably want to avoid trying to horn in on their hunting grounds.

Well, if you go into most wilderness areas you will be adding your needs to the needs of others already there, be it people or other animals. Some of them will fight you for a place in the sun.

Most states have a strategy of trying to preserve their wildlife to support tourist hunting. Having anyone move in to use up that game full time is not wanted.

Some areas however allow a prospector with a prospecting license to do the very things you propose to do.  It seems that the objective of encouraging mining outweighs the objective of preserving wildlife.

  2. Wow thats ambitious! You could look at the National Park service and I would think there could be someplace in Alaska you could go, or maybe canada, since they are a lot more remote. Be sure to bring rice or something so you get enough carbs! You may get cold in the winter so you may want to think about bringing a coat or something! good luck!!!!

  3. Perhaps you should think of preserving the meat, rather than hunting year round. That's what people did when they 'lived off the land'. Think of smoking, salting, drying (aka, making jerky), and curing.

Also, you should also look at the plant side of your diet. Most cultures were not strict, or even mainly carnivores. You should find out what edible plants there are in the area you decide on, and find out how to prepare them.

  4. Alaska

  5. Call the USGS, National Park Service, and the BLM.  Make sure you bring plenty of Hoppe's 9 cleaning accessories because black powder firearms tend to foul up after about 10 shots.
