I am 12 years old and I really want to make a difference in the world. A lot of community service projects require people to be older than I am. I read a story about a 12 year old girl who went across the country and raised $50,000 to build a school in Vietnam. It really inspired me, though I doubt I could ever do something that big. Do you have any suggestions for me?

  1. Volunteer to visit people in nursing homes or a va hospital. The world is improved by improving the life of just one person.

  2. Why don't you discuss this with your teachers and/or parents? Perhaps they have some good ideas.

Also, any non-profit organizations may need help and you could volunteer with them.

Community centers, Y's and churches/synagogues may also need help.

Also, think of your talents, skills, abilities, interests and perhaps you can help someone who needs what you can offer.

You don't need to make a big splash like this girl who raised $50,000 - you can start small with one step and then your project can grow. You are right - you can make a difference - everyone can help in their own small way to make the world a better place.

  3. You already answered your own question; 'but I believe that I can do something' so why let your doubts hold you down?; 'though I doubt I could ever do something that big?' Don't be your own worst enemy. You got some good advice already. That is, determine where your abilities and interests lie, and go from there. It sounds like you would like to do something for children who are in need. How about getting involved with World Vision or Samaritans Purse? Go to their websites and you will find lots of information on needs around the world and things you can do from within your community to help with projects or raising money. Why not initiate a fundraising project that gets your whole school involved to raise money to provide school supplies or clean drinking water to kids in need? Something as simple as a penny drive. You could also help kids in need in your own community.  With school starting soon, get your friends together to raise money to buy new backpacks and school supplies for those who need them. The thing is, you don't have to do anything your own. Get others involved and your ideas can grow into something big.

  4. You COULD do what i am about to do and donate baskets to your local hospital/hospice just email them
