  1. Fondant is not a cake but a thick putty like icing for cakes

  2. I saw that someone already posted a recipe for marshmallow fondant, which is definitely the way to go...but I think they made a typo in the recipe, it needs 2 lbs of powdered sugar, not 2 cups.  Here's the recipe that I usually use: http://whatscookingamerica.net/PegW/Fond...

The main tools that you will need are some sort of surface for rolling on, like a silicone mat, a thin plastic mat, or even a piece of smooth vinyl tablecloth, and a rolling pin.  Use Crisco to lightly grease the rolling surface and the rolling pin.

Roll your fondant to the diameter of your cake pan plus 9", if you're making a 2-layer round cake.  For example, if your cake pan is 8", then you need a 17" circle of fondant.  Frost the cake with a thin layer of buttercream to help the fondant stick to the cake, and to help it look nice and smooth.  Lay the fondant over the top of the cake and open out any folds or pleats that form on the sides.  Smooth the top of the cake first, and then the sides.  You can buy a fondant smoother to do it with, or use your hands.  When the fondant is smooth, use a pizza wheel or a sharp knife to cut around the bottom of the cake, leaving it a tiny bit bigger than you think you need (you can always go back and cut more off, but it's harder if you cut it too short).

  3. Fondant isn't the easiest material to work with but it is also far from the hardest and the beautiful look it gives your cake is worth the effort.

Some people think fondant is a waste because you usually take it off of the cake before you eat it but I've found a recipe that has a marshmallow base and tastes great so you can leave it on and enjoy your work. For this recipe you will need

    16 ounces of miniature marshmallows

    2 tablespoons of water

2 teaspoons flavoring (I usually use vanilla to keep it simple)

    2 cups of powdered sugar

    Shortening

Take a large microwavable bowl and generously coat the insides with shortening. Place the marshmallows, water, and flavoring in the bowl and microwave for one minute. Stir and return to microwave in 30 second intervals until you have a very smooth mixture.

Grease another large bowl with shortening and place approximately ½ of the powdered sugar in.

Pour the marshmallow mixture into the powdered sugar and mix well. Gradually add more powdered sugar until you have a thick dough-like bowl on fondant. You should add enough sugar so that it isn't too sticky.

Wrap your fondant in plastic wrap and make sure it is air tight. Let it sit for at least an hour to cool since the marshmallow mixture was warm.

The rest is up to your creativity, roll the fondant out to cover your cake and save some for decorations. Feel free to use food coloring to make different colors or use edible markers to add fine details.

  4. make the appropriate shape try no to make it to tall ,because the fondant will slide off but before buying the color of fondant you desire and put it on after getting the desired shape lightly frost apply fondant ,and start piping ,and your home free!!!!!

  5. you can buy white fondant in a package from Wilton...sold at most wal-marts. i would suggest starting with something small, like just get some to play around with and try to do a cupcake or something, cause fondant is expensive to work with and all the accessories are too! you can get colored or plain white and color it with the Wilton icing color gels. just knead it till you get the right color. it's sticky and sorta messy..and normally tastes horrible. i usually ice the cake smooth with butter cream icing or apricot glaze (depending on cake type and all) and then do the fondant over that, cause lots of ppl hate the taste of it and pull it off before they eat it. good luck!
