  1. Oh oh oh -I've done this with my preschoolers - cut out a bunch of pictures from magazines of food and have the kids pick one - then ask them what they will need to buy at the store to make this and how you would make it. I made a whole cookbook out of these pages and took turns with the kids taking it home - the parents LOVED it - and it was hilarious!

We also just made placemats for our Mother's Tea - we had a teapot and teacup and had them color it with markers - then we laminated them.

  2. This is on the border of being a bit out of the developmental level to me. I guess if you have words along with pictures that are sequenced in the order they have actually cooked something........this would be quite good.  Take for example the tried and true "play dough"  Write down the steps to accomplish the play dough in a list 1,2,3, etc with single words with the first being capped example

    1)Stir

    2)Pour

    3)Measure

I would keep this low on the words and high on participation. These guys want to do, not listen to a speech.  You might even have you recipe on a felt board where they can move pictures to the activity in the recipe it belongs to After your cooking.  Just actually cook and this one is a winner.  Good Luck.

PS. Many easy play dough recipe's on the web that have few ingredients and are very fun.

  3. one thing that we did was send home a letter to parents asking them to send in their favorite recipe for our recipe book. then, the kids at our center decorated the cover of our books and drew pictures to go with the recipes. also, we put photos of the children with chefs hats on playing in our pretend and learn area (housekeeping). we typed up the recipes in a book format, putting the scanned pictures and photos in with the pages. then we put them together with the kids' artwork as the covers.

also, this year our class wrote a recipe for cooking a turkey at thanksgiving time. the children let us know just what you have to do to make a turkey such as take the feathers off, cook it at 40 on the grill, cook fish and put it on top. hahah. it was great. it might be fun to throw in a couple "class" recipes.

at thanksgiving time, our class also decorated place mats for the YWCA thanksgiving dinner. they loved it. i bet your class would love decorating their own place mats or the table cloth.

    EDIT:

What do you mean by a menu book?

you could have the children find and cut out different pictures of food that they would like on their menus. you could make it into a whole theme on making healthy choices. each kid could make their own menu called "Lisa's Healthy Food Picks" or "Sam's Favorite Menu". the kids could glue them on a menu and maybe you could type the words for them to paste by the picture or they could copy the name of the food in their own handwriting.
