I want to make my own quilt like comforter. I want it to be like a quilt with the comfort of a comforter. I've already decided I'm making it, but I just need some free online instructions. I want it to have long strips of fabric across it, but I want it to be fluffy like a comforter!!!!! The address below has a picture of what I want it to be like. It's the BIG picture that is the one i like. http://www.pbteen.com/gift/thm/thmgrl/thmgrlbde/index.cfm

If you have any idea how I can do this, then I would be thrilled to hear from you. Thank you SO much in advance!

  1. The fluffiness comes from your choice of batting - the stuff in between the fabric layers. In order to get a really puffy quilt you need to use a high loft polyester batting. Ask at the fabric store - they should be able to help you find what you need. Keep in mind that polyester batting is very warm and doesn't allow air to pass through as well as cotton and wool. However, cotton and wool batting will give you a flat, traditional looking quilt.

If I were going to make this quilt, I'd do it using a method called "quilt as you go." Normally when you make a quilt you sew together the pieces to make the top, the you layer the top, batting, and backing fabrics, then you sew through all three layers in a pattern to secure the batting in place, then you put a binding around the edges to finish it. With quilt as you go, you quilt the three layers together in smaller sections, then you sew the sections together. This is much easier than quilting (sewing together the layers) a giant quilt with a small machine.

Because of the assembly method, you could actually make a two sided quilt, so you might want to choose two completely different groups of fabric. This way you can change the look just by flipping it over. How much fabric and batting you need depends on the size of the bed. You can usually buy prepackaged batting in standard bed sizes. Measure how wide you need the quilt to be. You will buy fabric this long. You'll want 100% cotton fabric, which is usually a little more than 40" wide. Measure how long you want the quilt to be, adding extra if you want it to cover your pillow. Divide this number by 40 (the number of inches of fabric). This is how many pieces of fabric you will need. To clarify - if your quilt is going to be 78" x 87" (standard double size), you would need to buy 2 1/4 yards of 3 different fabrics. You can cut the fabrics the long way into 2 - 4 pieces, depending on how wide you want the strips.
