I want to make old-fashioned ale and mead at home. Any tips?

I would like to brew at home, the old-fashioned way. Is all I need basically sterile quart jars, ingredients and bottles? Any tips on good recipes?

  1. i have made mead (honey wine) ales, porters, stouts, etc...

    my best advice is get a homebrewing book.  Cleanliness is essential. also understanding why your doing something is best (i.e. don"t pitch the yeast when it's too hot or you'll kill them!)

    also i made mead when a friend donated the honey. some ingredients can get get pricey. also look into making apple jack or hard cider ( pretty easy by most standards)

    on books I recommend "The New Complete Joy of homebrewing" it's like the ultimate book for it.
