  1. A well respected, and conventional starting place for many years now is karting.

Many drivers start with karts and move from there into a series like Formula BMW (there are several FBMW series around the globe). One can also go the Formula Renault route right from karts with some good driver coaching. But FR depends where you are, as they just didn't last in NA and are long gone. In the USA and Canada, FBMW is the first good step.

You can also learn cars through schools like Skip Barber Racing. They have many programs for driver training, as well as a nearly endless schedule of races around NA every year. They also have a "National Championship" class that offers prize money to the season champion to help move up into the next level. IIRC, Marco Andretti was Skip Barber National Championship series champ in 2004.

From one of these entry-level racing options you've got to work hard to get backing or have a big personal budget to get you up to something else.

In Europe you're looking at F3, World Series by Renault, GP2, and so on. In North America you're looking at Formula Atlantic, Formula Mazda, or the Infinity Pro Series.

It's a long road, and it can take years to work towards a paying drive.

The idea to talk to drivers in the pits is a good one. I know a driver in ALMS who did karts, then FBMW, and then went into Grand Am and ALMS and is a paid driver!.

Hope this is of some help.

  2. Go karts at age 3.

  3. Take a look here. This should give you something to think about. http://www.iwannagoracing.com/

  4. Have you ever driven anything built for racing?

If not then you really don't know if you're cut out for it.

It's tough or we wouldn't bother with it.

Get a used racing kart and try your hand.

You may not like the rigors of racing.

If you do you'll already know what to do next by then.

  5. If you are younger than 15 start with carting. If you are not, just forget about it...

  6. Most important thing to do is to go to the track, meet the good drivers, and ask to help with their car. Always look for the drivers with good character and ask if they need any help. You can do this by paying to get into the pits. It will cost about $20 to $25 to get into most tracks.

There are several different kinds of racing. If your goal is to be an Indy car driver, look into go carts. If your goal is NASCAR, go carts never hurts, but you can also do other things like street stocks.

Try to find a good local track. If I knew where you were located I could point you in the right direction. The key is to meet the right people and WORK VERY HARD to get a car onto the track. Racing takes a lot of sacrifice. Only some people get it handed to them, but many have made it by working hard and meeting the right people.

Be polite, hard working, and the rest will take care of itself. Also, don’t forget that nowadays people are educated in racing. Do not lose focus in school. Your education will help any goals you have in the future. If you do not perform in school, you have hurt your chances a lot. Get A’s in school and then go to the track on the weekends.
