I want to move a long distance away, help (UK)?

Hi. I live in the mid-west in England. I'm 21 and I want to move about 230 miles, rather not say where. I've got almost nothing to pack up, if I can find a place to rent then I'll go with a sleeping bag, etc. I'm basically saying that I don't need a moving van, I don't want or have furniture to go with.

... but I don't understand the process. Yes, change postal address. Yes, notify banks and so on and so forth; but how do I get a starting date on a job in the area I'm moving to *before* going there? That's something I've been told I have to do, which sounds impossible.

Shall I go up with a tent and pitch somewhere? Stage myself from there for interviews and meetings with landlords for rental properties? I'm really good at living out, I can keep myself looking clean and so on... so that's what I'm going to do if someone can't make the whole thing clear for me.

Thanks in advance. I know this might be a monster question.

  1. Do you work for a firm with branches near where you are going ?? ask for a transfer

What sort of work do you want..?

Look at the Local newspapers online of the area you are going to for employment and properties ..I suggest a fast food  outlet for starters  Banks no real need to tell till you move into your new address  get gas, electricity,to read meters before you go or other folk wil use the utilities you willbe left paying for .. Go to a Youth hostel until settled ie interviews  and flat viewing

This aint a monster thing to do ,you are quite old  never to have done any of this ...come on man get a grip  joinup and go in the forces ,fireservice or police or maybe if you drive bus driver rail track men are always wanted..

travel tickets purchase on line  brill rail deals

getting real  you need money up front so if unemployed  and broke (but you have a bank)  get into employment  fast food for a month or two or pub barman anything to get money

  2. No, this is not such a big question. I did something similar myself, only it was more overwhelming because I went 4 000 miles with kids. It is a long story, but I needed to move far far away from my family. So I looked online and found a house. Sold everything I owned for money and hotels  along the way and gas and damage deposit for the new place. And we left without telling more than a handful of people. And we drove. Me. The kids. The dog. And a car load of stuff. So I think I can answer some of your questions.

You should not need a start date on a job first. Many people get jobs after they move. You can't attend interviews when you are not there. For myself I am in school, so that was easier for me. But you should be able to move there and than find a job. I can't see how you would do that from 230 miles away, as you have to be there in person for an interview

If you are staying in your current country... you should not have to need a passport, work visa or such. There are lots of homeless people in the world and unemployed... there is no law saying that you have to have a job. Many people are looking for one, without a current job. You will need references for your job though... so have some phone numbers ready.

As far as the living in a tent thing... you are not the only one doing that either. You sound worried about this adventure you are undergoing and so let me tell you that once I lived in an area where there was so many jobs so fast... the economy was booming and there was not enough houses. There was doctors and  high paying job employee's... like even rich people, who were living in campgrounds while looking for houses. It can be done. A tent is a little tricker to clean up for a job interview, but you can do it.

The banks are usually spread throughout, as they are chains... you may not have to switch banks.

Good luck.. you sound overwhelmed, and I was too. But it also sounds like a great adventure.

  3. Lol - I turned up in London with a backpack on my back from Australia, took a bus down to the coast and went from there!

What I'd recommend since you are already in the country and set up - do as much s you can before you leave.

    Accommodation: http://www.flatmateclick.co.uk/

    http://www.clickflatshare.co.uk/

Otherwise consider a B&B or something similar for a week.

If you flatshare, you will instantly meet new people and contacts and usually wont have to sign a lease or anything and it is usually cheaper. Once you've settled into your new location then you may want your own place.

Depending on what jobs you will be applying for, there are many job search engines that you could already be applying for work. Eg: www.reed.co.uk

The internet is brilliant for research and setting yourself up before you get there.

    Good luck! =)

  4. Come to  Australia : )

  5. too far away to be of much help .....yeah we hate landdlords too...............and those nasty nasty interviews.........maybe you could try the ymca?....or some paying guest?

  6. Ok well firstly I admire how you seem so casual to  get up  and go  -im like that with holidays

Well depends on Job position -high up you can get interviews based on internet applications

less higher up your prob have to  travel there 1st and apply for jobs then move there -or move there with enough money to tie you over until you get a job (how long does it normally take you to get a job ? Are there many jobs in that area?)

Could you ask for a transfer maby If where you work now has branches to where you moving?

Id advise you to  stay in a B&B for a while gives you some more shelter and facilities ect If your move before getting a job and a place there also  allows you to  talk to B&B owner on local jobs and good places to rent ect.

    Hope I've helped a lil
