  1. Student visa is probably the easiest way to stay here for a fairly long time (depending on what course) but there's alot of paper work. After you finish your degree and your visa is up though it's hard to get you onto a permanent residency visa.

My husband (american) and  I (aussie) who had been toether for 5 years and married for 3 years even had trouble to get him a residency and he is skilled and married to an aussie. We didn't have any criminal records or anything else to make the process harder but my husband did over stay a visa once when he was 17 in australia (which ended up not being  at all important). It took us thousands just to logde the paper work, I think it was about $2000 - $2500 but you also have to get crimal records from every country you've lived in (which were a few for us) and then a full medical and a bunch of other things which all cost alot of money and end up eating away alot of time. We also had a lawyer which helped us out heaps so nothing could go wrong with the application, as she told us many people do not answer application forms right or miss a quest ect and they get denied and after a denyal you must get a lawyer and it's super hard to get in then.

Anyways a lawyer in another few thousand too. Then the process takes about 6 months of waiting, sometimes up to a year. Just depends on if theres lots of people immigrating when you are. You can not work in this period or study or do anything (drove my hubbie crazy).

But now we happily live here in australia and our next big thing will be to get dual citezenships for both of us to australia and america. Gotta save a bunch for that one.

There is no other real way you can stay in australia unless you go on to a visitors visa after study for three months and then keep getting it extended but you can only extend for about a year. It's treated case by case if you already have been in australia on other visa's.

Otherwise you can live here illegally ;P Check out this website:
