I am of Italian decent with a background in management and real estate. I have owned my own company for a few years but I would like to move to the Grand Canal. How do I find empoyment and a place to live? Do most people there speak english? It seems expensive to live there, is it easy to find a job that will cover the expenses and still be able to save money? Any help is appreciated!

  1. NUMEBER ONE! learn ITALIAN!

number two. Have some Euros in your pocket

number three. Forget hollywood! and its magnificent films and tag lines. Imagine the real life!(with you in it!)

All of the sudden it may not be so glam after all.... think about it!

better work hard in your company and take more vacations to Venice!

  2. An apartment on the Gran Canal can be really expencive, impossible to buy with a normal job. But Venice is a lovely place to live also close to the quiet campos and narrow canals.

With your background i think you could find a good job both in the real estate market and in the tourist business. But you need someone there to help you and introduce you. Good luck.

  3. Just do it!  Get up and move and stay in hostels they are cheap.  Join groups that could help you get familiar with Europe.

  4. you should apply for a job in a joint-venture company or anyhow a big company that can hire you from abroad and detach you to venice. Also contact companies like "Manpower" that find a job anywhere

  5. go left

  6. It is not impossible, but it is very hard. You can get a 3 month visa to start.  You can not stay after 3 months are up unless you can find employment which is very hard to get. The employer must go through a lot of red tape to give you the job. They do not usually want to give you a job and take it away from a citizen.  With employment and a place to live you must still apply for permanent residency which doesn't happen fast. Taxes are 50% of your pay. Health care is free and college is basically free.  Living in a major city is extremely expensive.  In Rome, a one room efficiency is approximately $1400.00 a month.  Along the Grand Canal there are mostly mansions owned by some of the richest people in the world.  Most young people speak English. They take English in school as there second language. In restaurants, stores, etc. you have no problem finding people that speak English.  You will never see more beautiful art and architecture than in Italy. I found people to be friendly and helpful. My dream is also to live in Italy. Although it is very difficult to get the opportunity to live in Italy, it is not impossible. Never give up trying if it is your dream!

  7. Go for a look see. rent an apartment for the weeks or months you plan to stay to check out the scene

It is expensive... rents going at 1,500.00  to 1,800.00 for a one bed room apartment. Work? You'll need to have a work visa and that's where the complications begin.

You should really contact John Murphy at The Informer for laws regadring foreigners working in Italy (taxes, paperwork, visas, pensions and much much more).
