I want to move to a small eastern German village?

My ultimate goal is to move to a small village or city in eastern Germany, and spend the rest of my life there. I would love to teach English to support myself. How real do you think my chances are of being able to do this. I study German as a hobby and am taking it at college next year so that won't be a problem. Is English teaching a good way to get into Germany or should I go into another field of work? I would like to move somewhere in Thuringia. Erfurt, Weimar, Nordhausen, Sondershausen, Jena, Gera, etc... Also, how educated should I be? Bachelor's Degree enough?

  1. Becoming a teacher if you only know one subject might be difficult. Especially in languages and social sciences the competition may be hard. Being a foreigner doesn't make it easier. Additionally, in eastern Germany, the demand for teachers might be rather low, as many younger people and families move to the west and the birth rates are quite low.

I'm not sure about the requirements in education. Might also depend on the branch of the scholar system, you want to choose (Hauptschule, Realschule, Gymnasium).

I don't want to seem too pessimistic, but at least be prepared it might not work and keep some alternatives.

    Good luck anyhow.

  2. me, being from easter germany ... i think it would be a great idea. you will come far with knowing english, go and study german some more and then go over there and check it out first :)

    goodluck!

I can tell you a lot about all this. I LIVED in WEIMAR for awhile and go there almost every year and have friends all over the country now but they all started mostly in Weimar.  it is a great City to live in as is Jena, Erfurt and the surrounding villages like Taubach!

Email me and Ill tell you what I can. I know that area very well and have many friends there and Weimar is a second home to me. The train and bus system will get you about anywhere you need to go but being an American you ahve a few goals to overcome which I can explain if you write me. It is too much to go into here. Id rather get some exact questions and such. I realy can assist you on this for Im American and moved there successfully and back and have though of moving back again too!!

You may have to make me a contact to email me though, if you do I will accept.

(I hope the emails helped, if you need more infor or have more questions feel free to ask me) I go there yearly to Weimar.
