  1. I would go talk to the new accounts person at the bank you're interested in and they can give you all the details.

Generally speaking, many banks will charge no fee for an account when you have a regular direct deposit. You will need to be 18, have two forms of ID and from $100 - $300 cash or check to open a new checking account.

  2. Go to both banks and ask them your questions. Weigh out the pros and cons and then go from there.

  3. it shouldn't cost anything, just tell them you want to open an account and put a little money in it to start off. The money will stay yours. It really does not matter which bank you choose. I don't know about online, I just recently discovered that that is possible.

  4. Most banks will open a checking account for you at no charge. If you go to the bank in person, you will usually get your first 10 checks, with routing and account numbers printed on them , before you leave the bank. You then just give a "voided" check to your employer, and they will directly deposit your salary into the account each pay period. After your account is set up, you can then get internet access at most banks. The decision on which bank should depend on any fees they might charge - choose the free or least expensive option.

  5. Given those two, go with Wachovia.  BofA is awful.
