  1. If its going to be a center, you should check with the state of Texas' licensing requirements.  They might require you to have classes in early childhood development and/or child psychology.

You could also check out Entrepreneur magazine.  The list daycare franchise opportunities.

  2. I am a former daycare director in the state of Texas.  Go to the following website:

    www.dfps.state.tx.us

This is the website for child care licensing in the state of Texas.  Click the link on the left to get to Child Care Licensing.  Search through the info to find the "minimum standards," probably an Adobe Acrobat or Word file.  Look for the director qualification for a child care center (not licensed or registered home).  Basically, the requirements include both education and experience, and if you have more of one then you need less of another.  For example, and look at the chart in the minimum standards to have the actual numbers, if you only have a high school diploma, you would need 5 years of experience in a licensed childcare facility.  But if you have a bachelors degree, you don't need to have any experience.  It will also tell you what some suggested degree programs are.

Really, the first real step in opening a center in Texas is to contact the Department of Family and Protective Services Child Care Licensing office that is closest to you (search that website I gave you), and ask them about when their next new childcare facility orientation is.  You have to go to this orientation to get all the information you need to apply for the license (including director qualification requirements).  Don't know your timeframe, but if you already meet qualifications, you could be looking at opening in less than 6 months if you are agressive enough.  If you need anything more specific, please email me at smicheleholmes@yahoo.com

  3. You need a PhD in the rapid random motion of little Wookies and a good net.

  4. You need to look at the licensing laws in Texas. It may be possible for you to be the owner but hire a director with academic credentials.

  5. Check with your state legislator or congress person and find out the laws and what is required.  Try googling state of Texas laws, and see where it take you.  Do some more research.

  6. a drug test and a clean record
