I want to own horses and give riding lessons etc. Then like on weekends or something, I want children who have cancer or other sicnkesses to come and ride the horses and enjoy the day. I also want to split the profit of what I make with the horses and give half of it to children with cancer. I want the children to have a day they will enjoy and do something they may not of done. How would I get started and what do you think?

  1. One thing, you will learn that it is extremely expensive to have horses, and you wont really be able to afford to split the profits with anyone other than the horses. Its not impossible, but will be very difficult.

You have to have certification to run a therapy riding place. If you get certified, then you could also make any donations that people give as tax-deductible.

Look into grants and things, if you are doing a therapy center.

If you are wanting to give riding lessons, make sure you yourself spend a lot of time between now and then learning everything that you want to teach.

Make sure you know how to properly care for horses, and their equipment.

    Good luck!  :)

  2. Sounds like a good idea, you sould obviously start by looking for a couple horses/ponies. Look for calm horses, ones that may have previously been trail horses. As far as the donations go, all you really need to do is search online for a foundation that you like and then start donating. When you begin advertising you should contact schools and hospitals.

  3. Horses are very expensive! You wont be able to split the costs

You also need a certificate if your going to do horse therapy

There are other things that you need to look into.............. but

it's a miracle and if you can do it, hats off to you you're a great gal

  4. I think it's a beautiful idea. You're sweet.

First, make sure you are within the range of rich---rich as in rich-rich in order to do such horsley things. You also need the motivation, if you arent fully confident than don't lead on.

Start out slow and easy. Place adds up and have at least two lessons a week, let it grow. But I would advise to get a form for them to sign before riding just in case.

Ask around in your area. Find someone you can apprentice under---a trainer for example. I am apprenticing under my horse trainer sandra but most of the time it's not as easy as I got it. I'm not that rich---but I still made it out since I have support from my parents and trainer.

The horse buisness is tough and sometimes really sad. Follow your heart, thats all you can really do--but don't forget about your brain :)

    Happy trails.

  5. It's an admirable goal, but an expensive one.  Your best bet for accomplishing this is to go to college and study for a career that is stableand pays well.  Unfortunately, what you aim to do is going to take a LOT of money.  Giving lessons pays next to nothing, let alone enough to be able to split profits with the needy.

A word about "marry someone that has money" - when taken seriously and not as a joke, that is seriously TERRIBLE advice.  I work as a paralegal to a divorce attorney, and to makea long story short, let's just summarize by saying that a) No one expects to divorce their spouse, but it happens frequently, and b) You don't even want to know what a divorce does to a person's finances...even those people that make $100,000+ a year.

Forget the misconceptions people have about alimony, child support and the divying up of personal property - believe me when I say that I have never NOT seen BOTH parties get the short end of the stick in the end.  It's not like on TV where the wife gets to keep all of her nasty husband's money.

Never mind about losing their horses - these people lose their own homes most of the time.  The only person you can depend upon so far as your money goes is YOU.  Don't ever rely on anyone else for that!

    *steps off soapbox*

Sorry, but if this job has taught me one thing, it's to be financially independent under any and all circumstances!

  6. Get some property, nice calm horses, and liability insurance. First start with riding lessons then as you get that perfected get volunteers for a weekend for a therapeutic riding weekend (an grand opening for cancer patients) and get children signed up for your program

    Great Idea and Good luck

  7. It's an admirable venture!  It is very hard to work with horses and make a living, much less a profit...Look into donating your time to these charities, get your training certifications that you are interested in, and research all the expenses - (insurance is a biggie, with horses and children!), feed, veterinary care, manure management for the quantity of horses you want, TAXES, licenses, etc.

It can be done, but it's not for the faint of heart (or wallet!)

    Good Luck!

  8. Two words.... RICH HUSBAND.   No one makes money in horses, there is no profit to split.

Jesus, you broads have no sense of humor, and I'm here to tell you, if I could turn back the clock, get that boob job and get a rich old man I'd do it in a HEARTBEAT!!  And I work my *** off for everything I have and still can't turn a profit worth a d**n.  Honey, RICH HUSBAND, marry for the money, and then you can do what you want, spend your first $5000 on a great pair of knockers!

  9. LOANS lol

  10. Why dont you look into doing a non profit thing 501(c)(3).  In getting mine together but i have a horse rescue, paperwork from heck let me tell you.  Its very expensive to get started...Right now I'm paying for everything myself and in the past lets say 3 months, i have spent 30 grand on pipe corrals, shelters and whatnot's.  I'm not done, i need three hay barns put in and we are in negotiations now for them.  That's my next huge project.  My mare motels thank goodness are partly being donated, haven't got the final bill for that.  I keep getting in prego mares.  Feed is high right now, me and my poor truck hit the feed store every few days ( i have many horses) The feed store loves me, to bad they dont deliver LOL.  I also have 50 grand dedicated to vet emergencies.  If you have the money go for it, its hard work and no days off.  Its great you want to donate part so a non profit may be a way for you to go to get grants and funding.

  11. GOOD FOR YOU!!! BRILLIANT AIM IN LIFE!!!

I WORK EXACTLY THE SAME AS YOU!!!

I HAVE MY OWN RIDING/LIVERY STABLES AND ALSO DO RIDING FOR THE DISABLED(RDA) I HAVE A STUD FARM TOO!

I STARTED TO SAVE UP WHEN I WAS 11.

I SAVED UP ABOUT $23,000 BY DOING PAPER ROUNDS WORKING AND STUFF LIKE THAT.

I THEN BOUGHT A 10 ACRES PLOT OF LAND FOR $20,000.

I STARTED WORKING FULL TIME AND SAVED UP $48,000 IN 2 YEARS.

I BOUGHT 20 STABLES FOR $13,000 AND PUT THEM ON MY 20 ACRES BLOCK, ADDED A TACK ROOM AND HAY BARN AND AREAS WHICH MADE THE WHOLE THING $34,000 ALLTOGETHER.

I ALREADY HAD 2 HORSES SO I PUT THEM INTO WORK THERE.

I BOUGHT ANOTHER 4 HORSES WHICH COST $6,000

I STARTED DOING RIDING LESSONS EVERYDAY BUT SUNDAY, AND MADE QUITE ALOT EVERYDAY.

    I CHARGED $20 GROUP LESSON, $25 PRIVATE.

MADE ABOUT $200+ PER WEEK WHICH COVERED THE FEED FOR ALL MY HORSES.

I WENT ON LIKE THAT FOR A YEAR AND AT THE END OF THE YEAR I HAD MADE $207,000 I HAD $89,000 SPARE. I ALSO HAD ALL MY 14 STABLES FOR LIVERY AND HAD 14 LIVERY CUSTOMERS. PEOPLE WERE ALSO IN LINE FOR LIVERY. SO I BOUGHT THE FIELD NEXT TO ME WHICH WAS 29 ACRES.

ADDED ANOTHER 30 STABLES. AND ADDED A JUMPING ARENA AND MORE TURN OUT FIELDS WITH ELECTRIC FENCING.

I BOUGHT ANOTHER 10 HORSES WHICH INCLUDED MY OWN HORSES MY 4 CLYDESDALES.

SO AFTER THAT I HAD ABOUT $17,000 LEFT SO I BOUGHT A NEW CAR.

IN 2 YEARS TIME I HAD MADE OVER $500,000 AND ALL MY STABLES WERE USED. SO AFTER LOTS OF WORK I SET UP A RIDING FOR THE DISABLED GROUP AND DONATED $10,000 A YEAR. EVERY SUNDAY WE HAD OVER 50 KIDS COMING TO RIDE THE HORSES.

I BOUGHT MY OWN HOUSE A YEAR LATER AND HIRED 10 MEMBERS OF STAFF PAYING THEM $20 PER HOUR.

I ALSO BOUGHT A VERY VERY LARGE BARN AND MY STUD FARM.

IT'S TWO YEARS FROM THEM AND I NOW HAVE 98 HORSES, 100 STABLES, 16 ARENAS, 12 ,10 ACRES TURN OUT AREASAND HOLD A RDA GROUP EVRY MODAY AND SUNDAY. AND MAKE ABOUT 500,000 A YEAR AND HAVE ABOUT $100,000 LEFT!

IT'S WELL PAIDED AND GREAT FUN GO FOR IT AND GIVE IT YOUR ALL!!!

    **HOPE I COULD HELP!**

AIM: START OFF LITTLE AND GET BIGGER AND BETER!!!

  12. You need more help than you can get from this column, although it it a start.

Find someone who owns such a place as you have in mind and go to work for them. They will always need help. Learn what you can from them and if you still want to do this, go for it.

  13. First of all, you will need suitable horses, a large tract of land, training and riding facilities.  Talk to a financial advisor or banker who can tell you how much money you will need.  Then, work up a business plan and present it to a bank or lending institution to get financed.  Learn what your tax and insurance liabilities will be and see if you can cover them.  It's a very kind and humanitarian idea, but it might not be feasible.  This sort of facility will take tremendous planning and quite a lot of money to get started and to thrive.

  14. Well in order to have a horse farm you need land lots of land. The land size depends on the number of horses. To have a horse farm you need to put in a lot of time and money to do this. Yoou will need either a wodden fence or electric fence to keep them in the pasture. You would need to build stables for them to sleep in and mabye if you want eat there. Tack room for the saddles and everything. And you need food and hay and water. also you need to buy good horses that kids will be safe on! Like I said lots and lots of money and time! Goood Liuck I like what ur doing! :)

    Enjoy:)

  15. i think it is a good idea, if it's what you want to do.

but horses are expensive. so i suggest that you get a really good job, like nursing/doctor/vet/marry someone with money.

my plan: go to school, get a nursing dregree, once i have enough money saved up start my own horse farm.

if you want to help kids with cancer, go work in health field and help them that way as well. i'm going to be a neonate icu nurse.  alittle different but still helping kids.

good luck, and if you ever need help with any general ideas, just email me, most my friends are into horses/trainers. i'm sure i can ask them questions. or if you have a trainer in you're area go ask them for advice.

edit: i wouldnt seriously think someone would marry for money, and nothing else. i'm not that dense, it was a joke and i still dont know why people take things dead serious on here, i promise i'll never joke about anything on yahoo answers as long as i shall ever live (or for the next 2 seconds...)

didnt i say get a good job? oh wait that's depending on yourself and not someone else. . . would seem that there are some dense people here who never like to joke or have fun. i'll keep that in mind next time.

  16. That is a very worthy goal.  However you need a reality check.  Most Therapeudic riding centers survive on donations.  The horses must be housed, vetted  and they must eat.  The facility will need upkeep and the stalls will need bedding - all of that costs lots of money. Horses are a very expensive hobby - not a money making enterprise.  If you charge for lessons and such you might make a little money so the horses will cost less out of your pocket but with the costs associated with keeping up the facility, feeding the horses and insurance it is doubtful that you can ever make a profit on it.  More like it will cost you tons of money.
