I want to paint a fireplace surround, which is made out of alabaster. What kind of Paint can I use? ?

Can I use normal housepaint or does it require the use of a special paint?

  1. Painting alabaster is not recommended, but you could seal it with a stone varnish.


  2. use zinnser paint sealer. then use whatever paint finish you wish, i would recomend a satin finish.

    p.s. 24 years as a decorator


  3. Polished alabaster is not paintable. To paint alabaster sculptures, artists must sand down the surface with special tools, and the paints they use are not suitable for a fireplace surround and will not stick to polished alabaster.

  4. I don't think you can as it has a hard surface which wont hold the paint. After a while, and even quicker whe the fire is used, it will peel off.
