The finish has worn off badly and I cannot afford to have it redone. So I think this is my next best choice.

  1. I would scrape with a wire brush  first, then apply a coat or two of exterior Kilz, then your color. The man at the paint store will guide you. There is all sorts of paint sold to seal and water proof basements and boats.

  2. It can be done DIY, but you do need to have it extremely clean and prepped and use the proper coating.  Be sure and have enough ventilation while working on this project.

  3. You need an epoxy type paint for this & it's not as easy as it seems.  They have DIY kits, but I've not heard many good things about them or recoating tubs and sinks in general unless it's done professionally.  You can't just prime and paint, if that's what you're asking - it will peel right off & be even worse than what you've got now.
